Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, home to the Frio River, is one of the best places to enjoy Costa Rica's wilderness. The area is protected by the Ramsar Convention, which includes wetlands deemed to be of international importance. The wetlands along the Rio Frio are home to many birds, multiple monkey species, and sleek reptiles, to name a few. The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is located on the Costa Rican/Nicaraguan border, about a 1h30 drive from the Bijagua area.
