Clarity for the Curious

To access Nicoya Peninsula from San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR):
- By Air: Fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, then take a domestic flight to Cóbano Airport (near Santa Teresa and Malpaís) for southern Nicoya.
- By Car: From San José, expect a 4.5 to 5-hour drive to Nicoya town, plus additional 1–2 hours to coastal towns like Nosara or Santa Teresa. From Liberia, driving to northern Nicoya destinations like Nosara takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.
- By Ferry: For southern Nicoya destinations such as Santa Teresa and Montezuma, take the Puntarenas-to-Paquera ferry (about 1 hour), followed by a 45-minute to 1-hour drive.
While a 4×4 vehicle is not mandatory, it is highly recommended, especially during the rainy season (May–November). Many roads, particularly in the southern part of the peninsula, are unpaved and may have potholes or require river crossings. A 4×4 provides better clearance and traction, ensuring a safer and more comfortable journey.
Nicoya Peninsula offers luxury travelers exclusive private surf lessons on world-class beaches, guided bioluminescent night tours, gourmet island dining with private chefs, and wellness retreats featuring yoga.
The optimal time to visit is during the dry season, from mid-November to August. This period offers pleasant weather, ideal for beach activities and exploring the region’s natural beauty.
